As a wedding photographer based in north central Illinois, I've spent years photographing couples throughout the Starved Rock area. It's a place I know well, not just for the iconic overlooks, but for the quieter corners, the changing light, and the little moments that make every wedding here unique.

ways to get married at Starved Rock:
there are two very different paths to get married.
Here's how each one works:
1: Starved Rock Lodge
If you want a full wedding day with a ceremony space, a reception hall, and a team handling logistics, Starved Rock Lodge is the venue everyone means when they picture a Starved Rock wedding. The historic lodge was built in the 1930s and sits right inside the park, so you and your guests get that woodsy, timeless feel without leaving anything to chance.
A few things worth knowing:
Ceremony spaces: Outdoors, you're looking at the Sunrise Shelter (seats up to 200) or the smaller, more intimate Canyonside Courtyard, both tucked into the trees. If the weather doesn't cooperate, you move indoors to the Great Hall and say your vows in front of the massive stone fireplace instead.
Reception: The Great Hall does double duty, with vaulted ceilings, log timbers, and room for dinner and dancing right next door in the Starved Rock Room.
It's all-inclusive: catering, rentals, an event coordinator, and even trolley transportation from area hotels are part of the package, so you're not stitching together five different vendors.
Capacity: Anywhere from an intimate 30-person gathering up to a 200-guest celebration.
Because the venue handles permits, insurance, and coordination with the park, this is the route for couples who want the Starved Rock scenery with none of the paperwork.
2: Elope in the park
If a big lodge wedding isn't your vibe and you'd rather say your vows on a canyon overlook with just your favorite people, you can absolutely get married inside Starved Rock State Park itself. It just takes a little planning ahead.
Here's what that actually involves:
Special Event Permit: Illinois state parks require a permit for wedding ceremonies. You'll want to contact the park office directly to confirm your ceremony location, guest count, and any photography guidelines before you build your day around it.
Groups of 20 or more: IDNR requires written permission from the site superintendent in advance, and may ask for additional liability coverage depending on your plans.
How to apply: Email your completed permit and proof of liability insurance (or a release of liability) to DNR.StarvedRock@illinois.gov, or mail it to the Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center, PO Box 509, Utica, IL 61373. Give it at least two to three weeks before your date. You'll hear back by email or phone (815-667-4726) within two weeks of submitting.
The marriage license part: This is separate from the park permit. You'll apply in person at a County Clerk's office with valid ID, pay somewhere between $30 and $60, and wait 24 hours before it's valid. Illinois requires your officiant to be physically present too, no virtual officiants allowed here.
The park itself is free: No entry fee, no parking fee, just the permit if your ceremony calls for one.
Eloping at Starved Rock is perfect for couples who want the canyons, the waterfalls, and the quiet without a guest list or a ballroom attached to it.

How do you approach giving a gallery that feels timeless? I like to edit true to life color with an extra touch of whimsy and a smidge of filmy nostalgia. I don’t love trendy editing. True to life colors with cinematic light are where the magic happens. I am always hunting the right light. I want you to look at your photos years from now and still be stoked you printed them huge and hung them on your walls as art.
