NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY | IN HOME SESSION | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Is there anything better than newborn photos? I don’t think so. These in home newborn photos were a blast to take. I like newborn photo shoots because there is no shortage of warmth and love surrounding this new little one. Megan picked up my business card several years ago at the fair. When it was time for newborn photos she contacted me and told me she had been following for a long time! I was so grateful for Megan and her patience and timing on this photo shoot. She contacted me many months in advance to make sure we could get photos of brand new little one that was on the way. Of course I ensured her we would make it work and I am thrilled we did.

Everything is new when it comes to having a newborn in the house. From the way they smell to their ever changing features, newborn photo shoots are amazing because they have elements of magic and miracles in each frame. Mom and dad were doing great with this transition and you could see that each moment was a learning experience and a welcomed one. Through my communication with Megan, I got to know a little bit about her story and from traveling to cosmic meetings, it seemed like her relationship also had those same wonderful elements of magic and miracles. It is so fun for me to learn about people’s stories and get to know them as I take photos. Knowing their story helps me paint a picture of who they and what life is like in those moments I share with them. This little guy has only begun his story but I am beyond thrilled to know that they will have these photos to document where it started when he entered this world. He was cared for and planned for. Overall, it was overwhelming just how loved he was from the very first moments.

5 CLIENT SESSIONS TO CONVINCE YOU THAT SUMMER IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE FAMILY PICTURES

There are so many decisions to be made when it comes to family photo shoots. These questions mainly revolve around three words: when, where and why? We all know the why to family sessions is to document this specific moment in time, but what about the other two? When and where are two really big questions. While I offered a couple of suggestions on picking the best location for your family last week, I am here today to shed light on another secret of mine! I am asked a lot about what the best season is to have a family photo shoot and in my opinion, the proof is in the pudding! Take a look at these family photo sessions to decide for yourself!

I'll be honest, the best time to book a family photo session is in the summer! Are you surprised? I know a lot of people vote for fall and the leaves are beautiful during this time but there is something to be said for those lively green leaves too! This summer provided me the perfect opportunity to take advantage of beautiful settings full of lush green meadows with wild flowers and pops of natural color. We were also able to enjoy many water features that sometimes get a little too chilly to enjoy later in the fall season. Not to mention, Amarillo has some beautiful red sandstone that looks gorgeous against a summer setting!

A plus to scheduling a family photo shoot in the summer also is that schedules tend to be a little more flexible. The kids are out of school which usually means there are fewer activities pulling parents in all directions. Summer evenings offer immeasurably beautiful light that curves around the bright green leaves. There is no better way to end the day than to be together as a family documenting how wonderful and beautiful you all are!

FAMILY RANCH WILDFLOWER SESSION | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

I have people contact me for a variety of reason when they want to schedule a photo session but they all have one thing in common, life transitions. This cute family contacted me for their family photos on their family ranch and I was so excited to be able to take photos in a place that means so much to them. I was also beyond thrilled that because of the spring rain we received, we had an unusual and wonderful amount of wildflowers that we took advantage of during this photo session. Seasons are important to take note of when booking a photo session and having a vision for how you want these photos to turn out. Last spring was perfect for this one.

This location was new for me as it was owned by my clients family but I had so much fun exploring it with them. Being able to watch them move from location to location spoke volumes to who they are and their lifestyle on the ranch. The responsibility of owning and maintaining a ranch molds a person and brings out pride in what they have created. I saw this pride beam from Annie and her husband not just because of the ranch they had cultivated and grown however. Pride also beamed from both of them because of the two children they had also cultivated and grown. With their oldest off to college this year, I had the opportunity to take some one on one shots of both her and her brother. This is a big transition for a family of four and I think it will be an exciting one filled with wonderful things in the future. Transitions can be hard and they can introduce a vast variety of new experiences but being able to capture how things are now, before the shift is also wonderful and important.

FAMILY SESSION | PALO DURO CANYON | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Fall is always a hot time in my world and not because of the temperature. It is always hot because it seems everyone wants at least one family photo session during this season and I don’t blame them because it is a beautiful time of year. The light during the fall season is warm and vibrant. It lights even the darkest shadows or even those green leaves that haven’t quite turned color yet. Brittney and her sweet family scheduled this fall session on a great night to capture this light.

Family sessions always provide ample entertainment and ease as I watch little ones interact with each other and their parents. Big sister was so great getting her little brother to laugh and look at the camera when we needed him to. She fills her role as big sister so well! I also loved being able to photograph just how she fit into dads lap and how her little brother was so comfortable hanging out on mom’s hip. These little things are what bring me joy as a photographer. I can pick up on the habits and capture them as still memories and even get proof that fine baby hair blows perfectly with a crisp fall breeze.

There was no shortage of laughter and play in this photo session. I enjoy session like that. Parenthood is magical, it just is. This cute mama displayed just how wonderful motherhood can be and what a gift it is. Her small children looked to her throughout our whole session for guidance, for inspiration and for help. That is what motherhood is all about. Providing what children need is a hard job but these parents do it so well. I can't express how happy I was to capture this age for the little ones and this stage of life for all four of them.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE LOCATION FOR YOUR PHOTO SHOOT

HOW TO CHOOSE THE LOCATION FOR YOUR PHOTO SHOOT

There are about a million different settings and locations to choose from when it come to your lifestyle photo session with me. I am flexible and open to suggestions and love to go to new places and explore the unknown. I do have a few tips on how to choose that special location to help those clients who may not know where to begin.

First, do you have a vision for your photos? Some clients come to me knowing exactly what they want out of their photo shoot but others just want this time in their lives documented and the location comes secondary in importance. In these cases I like to provide a variety of different locations and start creating the vision and work directly with my client’s personalities to make sure it is a good fit!

Second, is there something in particular you want to do with your photos. Clients have a range of intended uses for their photos and I fully recognize they need to be usable for different occasions. However, there is usually a main desire to get these photos taken. Whether this session was booked for Christmas cards or engagement invitations or it is just to fill the beautiful frame you purchased years ago, I like to know your expectations and make sure I know how my clients want the session to feel.

Finally, what do you enjoy? Is nature a main part of your lifestyle or are you more comfortable in the city. Are you looking for abstract photos or wanting something natural with the ability to display many different backgrounds? It is very important to make sure all the different components of a photo are working together whether it is the wardrobe or the color choices, everything should work together!

Answering some of these questions may help you uncover some of your expectations for your family lifestyle session. It is my hope that when we work together, you will share your expectations with me and let me create a lifestyle session that captures who you are and stops time for a couple moments. That is my goal. To make this everything you want and more out of a photo session.

ENGAGEMENT SESSION | WESTERN FARMHOUSE STYLE | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

When two people come together, sometimes is is like worlds collide and create the perfect mixture. That is how this engagement session was in my opinion. Whitney and I chose this location based on a western farmhouse style of decor. We made this session one that could be easily displayed at events or in the comfort of their own home that complemented surrounding decorating. We decided that neutral was the best way to go but made sure that didn’t mean boring. Sometimes I say “neutral” colors and I see a little bit of disappointment in that word. I was not disappointed. From the cowboy hat to her splash of glam and sequins, this photo shoot was anything but boring. Their personalities were excellently executed in their wardrobes and I was thrilled with how the light captured a little bit of each feature they brought to the table.

We stepped a little outside of the box for this photo session and hiked to multiple different locations in this area. They were so good about working with me on different poses and trying a variety of new things. I was thrilled and so impressed that these two were so sweet and attentive to each other during our entire photo shoot. I guess I shouldn't expect anything different from an engagement session but I could honestly feel the love in their actions. It was amazing. I was also able to get intimate photos and photos that displayed their true relationship as if there was no camera present at all. I like those kinds of photo sessions. I love being able to sometimes guide but sometimes just sit back and observe at they paint this picture of their relationship through my photos. I was even able to try a couple new editing techniques for this photo session because I was just so inspired.

B + O | RIVER FALLS ENGAGEMENT SESSION | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Occasionally I will have clients that come to me and don’t really have a vision for their photos. They want photos taken and they know they of course want them to look good but other than that, they refer to me for the artistic creation of the perfect photo. Bailey was not that client. I was so impressed because she knew that she wanted to have the engagement session at River Falls Wildlife Refuge and had a dress already ordered. She had a vision. It was wonderful to see her personality shine through and jump out of each photo! The color she chose for her dress combined with her fiances wardrobe was brilliant against the foliage of this wildlife refuge.

Color theory is one aspect of photography that not all clients are aware I even think of. However it is a key element in choosing locations and creating an all inclusive piece of art. My goal as a photographer is to make these photos artistic pieces that show life and love. Simply put, I want these photos to be ones you live in and can escape to.

Having your photo taken can be awkward. I always encourage my clients to relax and act natural but often times it is easier said than done. Again, these two were not those clients. It was wonderful watching laughter fill this refuge and I was thrilled to be able to capture these two in raw elements, deeply in love. Of course love is one of the primary emotions in an engagement session and that was definitely the case here. Each photo and each move we made seemed to build upon the last photo and become more and more of story as opposed to flat photographs. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for these two and am thrilled I had the opportunity to capture life in these wonderful moments.

FAMILY SESSION | DOWNTOWN AMARILLO | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Have you had the time to take a look at these photos? Did you fall in love with her hair. Ya, me too. Jessika is actually my hairdresser and has an amazing personality to boot. For this session, I worked with Jessika and her family to pick the location and the wardrobe selections to build a photo that showed who they are as a family.

We chose downtown Amarillo and planned their wardrobe to pop against the neutral back drop of these seasoned buildings. Boy did this turn out to be the perfect combination of elements. As a photographer that works with my clients to coordinate locations and wardrobes, I seem to be able to take a little bit of the pressure off of my clients. I love being able to tell them what has worked in the past or what would be a new twist to create these photos that will last forever.

I loved being able to capture some of the texture in the background of these photos that added just enough to make these three shine and stand out as bold, energy filled individuals. Working with families is so much fun. While taking photos of little ones often requires a little more improvisation, these photo session allow me to take a snap shot of their growing and developing personalities along with how much love and inspiration they draw from their parents. These three had such a wonderful and powerful connection with each other and watching the relationship between this little girl and her loving parents was beautiful. Sometimes I think of how lucky I am to capture these moments and I have to often take a step back. I am pretty lucky to be surrounded by people who want to document their love for each other and I am grateful I am the person who gets to do that for them.

Currently Daydreaming

I have recently had an obsession with bunches of things… flocks, groups, colonies. I notice them everywhere. Sometimes while driving and witnessing a flock of birds in flight I feel as if I should pull over simply to stare. Butterflies, but only when they are all together. Ladybugs and that there is never just one. The shape of the clouds and how many there are. I am always searching for repetitive patterns. For instance, have you noticed how the trees line up perfectly straight in the middle of a forrest?

Even the words used to describe flocks of things intrigue me. Did you know that a group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope? A bunch of lady bugs is a loveliness? A group of jelly fish is a bloom? A group of trees a stand?

I had the absolute pleasure of working with this family for an in home lifestyle session.  Kali owns a beautiful boutique here in Amarillo called Athleisure.  She is wonderfully knowledgeable about all things workout related and was previously a personal trainer. James is a firefighter, but has also created products that support workouts and healthy lifestyle! His company is Atlas Supply Co. and his products are sold in the botique.  I personally can’t wait to try them.  I think these two are brilliant, and asked lots of questions because I have recently started my own health and wellness journey!  I have never loved to work out but recently found a love for combat fitness and I’m hooked!

Their gorgeous girl is not only adorable, but curious, and was extremely interested in what I was doing! She was full of smiles! I am so grateful they allowed me to capture them in their home.  I feel like our homes are where our lives happen.  We can sometimes take for granted how much happens inside those walls.  So much joy and late night dreaming happens in my own, and I know that when my own children look back on their childhood it will be important to see the house they grew up in.  I am so grateful I also get to capture that for others.
